This stepwell was inaugurated during the reign of Islam Shah (mid-16th century), the son of Sher Shah Suri. It is nestled near the historic Old Delhi area, adjacent to Fatehpuri Masjid, and was built in 1650 by Fatehpuri Begum, one of the wives of Shah Jahan.
Baoli literally means a stepwell, and 'Khari' or 'Khara' translates to salty, thereby translating the meaning of Khari Baoli to a salty water step well. However, the present status of Khari Baoli is totally the opposite of what it was. There is no trace of water near the so-called area of Khari Baoli, and it has now turned into a treasure trove of spices.
It is the world's biggest spice market that will allow you to select from various local and exotic spices. Hundreds of traders and buyers gather in the market for trading spices.
